Green Terror Takes Two in CC Twinbill

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- McDaniel and Swarthmore found the third time was the charm, with clear weather allowing the two teams to play the season series on Sunday afternoon at Preston Field.

Following two wins this afternoon by scores of 8-4 and 11-8, McDaniel improved to a 11-7 overall record and 4-3 in league play.  Swarthmore fell to 8-16, 0-8 CC.

In the first game, freshman catcher Mike Waterhouse (Weston, Conn. / Weston) led the Garnet with three hits and three runs scored.

After a scoreless, first inning Swarthmore put two runs on the board when juniors Wiley Archibald (Berkeley, Calif. / The College Preparatory School) and Jimmy Gill (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) crossed the dish.

Swarthmore pushing the score to 3-0 with a run in the third. With freshman Matt Lamb (Pacific Palisades, Calif. / Loyola) in scoring position, Gill drove him in with a single to right field.

McDaniel took the lead in the fourth, scoring four runs off of three hits. Jon Zimmerman collected two RBIs in the inning with a triple to right center. The Green Terror pushed the score to 5-3 in the top of the fifth after Harold Baines drove in Sergio Nieto.

After the Green Terror scored an additional two runs in the sixth, Swarthmore’s lone run in the seventh just wasn’t enough to complete the rally.

Tyler Persun (3-2) went the distance for McDaniel, striking out three batters to collect the win. Garnet sophomore Neil Mejia (2-4) (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park River Forest) took the loss pitching the first five innings for Swarthmore.

McDaniel took an early lead in the second game of the day, posting seven runs in the first three innings.

Swarthmore finally got on the board in the fourth scoring four runs. Lamb and senior third baseman Conor Casey (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) both drove in runs before freshman Miles Santo (Middletown, N.J. / Middletown South) smashed a single up the middle for two RBIs.

The Garnet came within one run from the Green Terror following two runs in the fifth. Waterhouse started the inning with a single up the middle and was put into scoring position after his classmate Anthony Montablano (Edison, N.J. / John P. Stevens) was walked. Archibald bunted a single to the Green Terror pitcher and Waterhouse scored off a throwing error while Montblano advanced to third. Lamb grounded out to the pitcher but drove in a run off the SAC out.

After four scoreless innings McDaniel batted in four runs pushing the score to 11-6. Despite two runs scored in the top of the ninth Swarthmore could not reach the Green Terror.

Joe Drzonsc (3-0) pitched three innings in relief for McDaniel picking-up the win while teammate Danny Snight earned his second save of the season pitching the final two innings. Swarthmore sophomore Andy Allen (3-1) (Machester, Maine / St. Dominic) started on the mound, pitching the first two innings to suffer the loss.

Swarthmore will return to Centennial Conference action tomorrow, Monday, April 6 with a trip to Chestertown, Md. The re-scheduled rainout game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
