Generals Hold Off Garnet

LEXINGTON, Va. -- After opening the Conference slate with an easy victory on Saturday, the Garnet took a long ride south to face its fourth nationally-ranked opponent in March.  Swarthmore came out on the wrong side of the contest, falling 7-2 to 19th-ranked Washington & Lee.

Swarthmore, currently ranked 12th in the Atlantic South Region, falls to 3-5 overall while the Generals, ranked fifth regionally, improves to13-3 on the season.

Garnet senior captain Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingstown, R.I. / South Kingstown) picked a 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles while freshman Zak Kelm (Shaker Heights, Ohio / University School) earned the other Swarthmore point in epic fashion, out-lasting W&L’s Brent Myers at No. 3 with set scores of 7-6, 6-7, 11-9.

Swarthmore returns home for a Conference match this Wednesday, April 1.  The Garnet will face Muhlenberg at 3:30 p.m.
