Mules Collect Win Over Garnet
LEHIGH, Pa. -- The Swarthmore baseball team fell to Muhlenberg, 4-1, in the 2009 Centennial Conference opener Tuesday afternoon at the Lehigh County Fields.
Muhlenberg (7-11-1, 1-0 CC) notched two unearned runs in the third inning and then tacked unearned runs in both the fifth and the seventh.
In the eighth inning, Swarthmore (8-9, 0-1 CC) got on the board with a solo home run by freshman second baseman Anthony Montalbano (Edison, N.J. / John P. Stevens) to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Mules. This was Montalbano’s (right) third home run of the season and the four-bagger broke a scoreless streak of 14.2 innings by Muhlenberg's All-Conference ace Phil Cresta (2-1).
Sophomore pitcher Neil Mejia (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park River Forest) did his part, locking horns with Cresta for seven innings, allowing zero earned runs on six hits, striking out six batters while falling to 2-2 on the season.
This Friday the Garnet look to avenge the loss, hosting Muhlenberg in a 3:30 p.m. contest at Clothier Fields.
