Garnet Write Off Dickinson
CARLISLE, Pa. -- Garnet junior attack Tyler Bradshaw tallied a career-high four goals and classmate Kevin Friedenberg racked up a career-high 18 saves as the Swarthmore men's lacrosse team defeated Dickinson 10-5 in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Swarthmore (2-3, 1-1 CC) picks up a win over the Red Devils (4-3, 0-1 CC) for the first time since 2003 (11-8 decision), put a five-game skid to bed. The Garnet maintain the sizeable advantage in the series (31-16) that began in 1957.
Dickinson generated a statistical advantage in many categories (40-23 lead in shots, 12-6 face-off record, 26-19 in turnovers) but it was the Garnet men setting the tone in the most important category – the one posted on the scoreboard.
Swarthmore built a 6-3 lead in the first half after getting two unassisted goals each by senior midfielder Will Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) and Bradshaw (Marietta, Ga. / Lassiter). Friedenberg (Needham, Mass. / Needham) left little room for the Red Devil offense to hit pay-dirt, making seven saves in the first period alone.
The Garnet got goals from freshman Max Hubbard (Washington, D.C. / St. Alban's) and junior Gavin Musynske (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park Memorial) to complete the half while Friedenberg remained stingy in net, accumulating 11 saves.
Swarthmore racked up both goals in the third period to open up an 8-3 advantage.
Friedenberg also led the team with four groundballs while holding his stature among the top goalies in the Centennial in save percentage (second, .649) and goals-against average (second, 6.80).
Swarthmore travels to Lancaster this Wednesday, March 25 for a 4:00 p.m. game at Franklin & Marshall College before returning home for a pair of contests with Muhlenberg (March 28) and McDaniel (April 4).
