Bears Hold Down Garnet
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Freshman Max Hubbard scored his first two collegiate goals for the Swarthmore men's lacrosse team that saw its rally fall short to Ursinus, 8-5, on Wednesday night at Clothier Field.
In Centennial opener for both teams, the Bears (3-3, 1-0 CC) benefited from three goals by attack Dan Monzo while fellow attack Jason Orlando added a pair of goals and an assist.
Swarthmore (1-3, 0-1 CC) got in the hole early, spotting the Bears a five-goal advantage in the first half. Hubbard (Washington, D.C. / St. Alban’s) swung the momentum in favor of the Garnet, tallying his first collegiate goal, an unassisted score, at 11:06 in the third period. Midfielder Ben Young (Washington, D.C. / St. Alban’s) followed with a goal of his own 13 seconds later, cutting the Ursinus lead to 5-2.
Bears midfielder Eric Farris pushed the visitors’ lead to 6-2, scoring an extra-man goal off a feed from David Kraus.
The Garnet got within two scores by surrounding the end of the third period with goals. Hubbard tallied his second score of the night with 2:05 left and Swarthmore was only down 6-4 after captains Stelios Wilson (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) and David DeSimone (Ronkonkoma, N.Y. / Connetquot) combined on an exciting pass-play for Wilson’s sixth goal of the season.
Monzo posted two scores in the fourth period to give the Bears a large enough cushion to win their second consecutive match-up with Swarthmore.
Ursinus goalie Tony Aquilano made five saves for the visitors while Garnet junior netminder Kevin Friedenberg (Needham, Mass. / Needham) posted nine stops.
Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday, March 21 at Dickinson with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial battle.
