Mutryn Hits Golden Goal in 2OT

CHESTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore freshman Marie Mutryn scored the game winning goal in a 13-12 double overtime win over Widener late Tuesday afternoon at Edith R. Dixon Field in non-conference women's lacrosse action.

Swarthmore secured their fourth win of the season while Widener evened out at 3-3 overall for the season. The Garnet came back in the second half to tie up the game and send it into double overtime.

After Widener scored the first two goals sophomore midfielder Emily Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) put a shovel shot past the Widener goalie at 18:48.

The Pride would continue to transition the ball well on offense and connected for the next four goals pushing the score to 6-1.

With just over six minutes remaining in the first half junior attack Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conrad) muller'10[pictured right] was fouled inside the arc and was awarded a free position shot, she drew back to see that teammate Kelsey Haztell ’09 (Havertown, Pa. / Havertown) was wide open for a goal making the score 6-2. Slowing down off a Garnet clear Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) brought ball into arch to set up an offensive play but saw that senior attack Marissa Schaffer (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School) was open for a cross shot to right side that went sailing into the Widener net. Scoring the final goal before the half time whistle Evans fought through traffic to bring the Garnet within two goals of the Pride.

Opening the second half Mutryn added another goal to the Garnet total when she circled around crease for her first of three goals on the afternoon to make the score 6-5 in favor of the Pride.

Widener counter acted with an addition goal to put them up two goals (7-5) with 20:16 left in regulation.

Following a shooting space foul Evans secured her fourth hat trick of the season to make the score 7-6.

vachal '11Freshman midfielder Maddie Williams (Kennett Square, Pa. / Kennett ) helped cleared the ball for Swarthmore and passed to sophomore Amy Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) [pictured left] who took ball in last 30-yards to beat two defenders for a shot to the bottom right of the net to make the score sevens all around.

Swarthmore took their first lead of the game (8-7) with 17:52 left after a failed free position hit the cross bar, Hatzell was there to scoop up the ball and send a pass to Mutryn who was front and center to capitalize a Garnet goal.

Widener evened the score with a goal during a man down situation for Swarthmore with 12:34 showing on the clock.

Between two Widener goals Evans put Swarthmore up by one off a free position goal making the score 9-8 before the third tie of the game.

Vachal 5:56 had an unassisted goal to tie the game again ten for each bench before Widener went up one again off a quick transition goal pushing the score to 11-10 with 4:02 left in regulation.

With 3:33 on the clock Muller was the lone Garnet player on the left side with a defender and was fouled. She scored a free position to tie it up again for the fifth time.

Widener went ahead with 46 seconds left after Swarthmore failed to clear the ball out of their defensive zone pushing the score to 12-11.

Only 15 seconds later Evans scored her fifth goal of the game to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime period Mutryn ended the game after she rolled around the crease to send one past the Widener goalie.

Garnet goalie Allison Grein ’10 (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) made nine saves and gathered five ground balls for her fourth win of the season. Also making moves for the Garnet defense Williams had six ground balls on the afternoon while senior defender Melissa Grigsby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) shut down several Widener attackmen on their way to goal.

The Garnet will host Immaculata in their home opener on Thursday, March 19th. The non-conference match-up is set for 7:00 p.m. at Clothier Field.
