Garnet Swat Away Bees

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- Swarthmore sophomore Amy Vachal led Swarthmore with five goals in an 18-4 non-conference win over Savannah College of Art and Design in women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at the SCAD Athletics Complex.

Swarthmore improved to 2-0 overall on the season while Savannah fell to 1-7.

Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) and Emily Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) registered their second hat tricks of the season; Evans picked-up three goals on the afternoon.

The Garnet took an early lead in the first half, out-scoring the Bees 13-4. Vachal scored all five of her goals in the half and junior midfielder Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard) contributed three helpers to the Garnet offense.

The Swarthmore defense stepped up their game in the second half, not letting any shots get past them. Senior defender Melissa Grigsby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) forced three Bee turnovers while collecting three ground balls. Freshman midfielder Maddie Williams (Kennett Square, Pa. / Kennett) picked-up four ground balls and scored her first collegiate goal. Garnet attack Annalise Mowry ’12 (Alpharett, Ga. / Milton) scored the final goal of the game with an assist credited to classmate Phoebe Hansen (Orlando, Fla. / University), both were career-firsts.

Swarthmore junior net minder Allison Grein (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) collected six saves on the afternoon.
