Vachal and Evans Throw Hats at TriCo Lax Party
HAVERFORD, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's lacrosse team opened the season with a 13-5 win over Moravian at the second annual Tri-Co Invitational held at Swan Field on the campus of Haverford College.
Even though Moravian (0-1) was the first to get on the board ten minutes into the game with a free-position goal from junior attack Jillian Pagliei, Swarthmore answered with a three-goal run to make the score 3-1 with 17:58 left in the half. Greyhound freshman Heather Yawger broke up the Swarthmore scoring surge with an unassisted goal at 16:08 cut the deficit to 4-2.
Sophomore Amy Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) scored back-to-back goals, adding to the Garnet total. After getting fouled in the arc, Swarthmore senior midfielder Anna de Regt (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) notched a free-position goal to make the score 6-2 at 2:31. Junior midfielder Paige Warbrick closed the half with a goal at the 1:44 mark for the Greyhounds.
The Garnet opened the second half with another round of three unanswered goals. The tallies were scored by freshman Marie Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna), sophomore midfielder Emily Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) and de Regt. Swarthmore senior defender Kelsey Hatzel (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) dished out her second assist of the afternoon to Evans, who completed her hat-trick at 13:12, making the score 11-4. With just under five minutes to go, Vachal (pictured) finished the scoring for Swarthmore with her fourth goal of the game.
Swarthmore limited their turnovers in the second half (eigh)t compared to Moravian who racked up 13 possession losses. The Garnet edged the Greyhounds in the shot category 18-10 in the second half as well.
Moravian goalie Courtney Rosenberg collected 16 saves and three ground balls while Garnet netminder Allison Grein '10 (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) made 11 saves and picked-up three ground balls.
The Garnet will return to action on Sunday, March 8, kicking off their spring break schedule with a game against Savannah College of Art and Design. The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
