Records Fall on Day One of CC Championships

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Swarthmore senior Cait Mullarkey and freshman Kenyetta Givans broke school records on the first day of the Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday in the Floy Lewis Bakes Field House on the campus of Ursinus College.

Mullarkey (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline) just missed a medal in the mile run with a personal-best time of 5:02.59. The NCAA provisional-time lowers her school record that she set earlier this year.

In the women’s 55-meter hurdle preliminaries, Givans (Conshohocken, Pa. / Plymouth-Whitemarsh) broke a program record with her time of 8.67.  The previous record holder, Catherine Laine, posted her 8.71 time in 1997. Givans will run in the finals tomorrow with hopes of a gold medal.

Senior Bess Ritter (Quaker Hill, Conn. / Waterford) posted a personal-best in the women’s 5,000-meter run with a sixth-place time of 18:08.94.

Garnet pole vaulter Taylor Wuerker '12 (Washington, D.C. / TC Williams) placed fourth overall, reaching to a 2.78 meters.

The women’s distance medley team picked-up the first Garnet medal of the meet with a bronze in 12:38.19. Junior Nyika Corbett (Myrtle Point, Ore. / Myrtle Point) ran the first leg with Givans and Natalie Stone ’09 (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) completing the middle legs while Mullarkey anchored the final portion of the race.
