Garnet Commands NYU Violets
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore men's tennis team took to the Mullan Center courts in their season opener Saturday, defeating New York University 7-2 .
Playing together for the first time at No. 1 doubles, senior Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingston, R.I. / South Kingston) and freshman Zak Kelm (Shaker Heights, Ohio / University School) rolled over NYU’s Craig Berger and Calvin Chou 8-2. Also playing together for the first time, sophomore Mark Wee (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) and freshman Max Bressman (Chappaqua, N.Y./ Horace Greeley) snatched an 8-6 win from Violets Eugene Tsarevskiy and Phil Rosenstein at No. 3 doubles. Freshman Stephen Youngblood (Norcross, Ga.) and senior Mark Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Arz. / Phoenix Country Day) completed the Garnet’s clean sweep of the doubles in an 8-5 win.
In singles play, both Shaughnessy and Kelm fell to their NYU rivals, Berger and Jason Sacher, at No. 1 and No. 3 respectively, but Youngblood scored the first singles victory for the Garnet men at No. 2, handily defeating Chou 6-2, 6-3. Senior JJ England (Palm Beach Gardens, FL / Benjamin School) secured the team’s victory, beating out Tsarevskiy in an exciting three set match, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-0. Bressman rounded out the Garnet win at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Alex Zara.
Over spring break, the Garnet men will travel to California, where they will face the top-ranked UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, among other teams.
