Swarthmore Takes Down Rival Fords
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- On Centennial Conference's Rivalry Night, the Swarthmore women's basketball team edged Haverford, 54-46, Wednesday evening in Tarble Pavilion.
The Garnet (10-8 overall, 7-4 CC) were led by sophomore guard Ceylan Bodur (Istanbul, Turkey / Roberts College) who posted her second straight double-double with game-highs in points (16) and rebounds (12), while alsodishing out five assists. Freshman forward Genny Pezzola (Oakland, Calif. / St. Mary’s College HS) made her first collegiate start and gave the Garnet an eight-point, five-rebound effort. Sophomore forward Kathryn Stockbower (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) marked her 40th career game in double figures, adding 11 points to the Garnet total.
Haverford dipped to 3-12 overall, 2-9 in the Conference. Senior forward Brittany Lattisaw posted a game-high 16 points and collected eight rebounds while classmate Kathleen Abels added 11 points for the Fords.
The long-time rivals started the game with a 5-2 run by Haverford, their largest lead of the game coming with 10:38 left in the half.
Stockbower went on a personal scoring-surge of eight straight points to give Swarthmore the 14-11 advantage with 5:46 showing on the clock. The run was cooled by a Haverford three-pointer from Abels, tying the game at 14 a side.
Bodur hit a three-pointer with 2:26 left in the half, giving the Garnet a lead they would not recind. The first half ended with Swarthmore up, 26-18.
The second half started basket-for-basket, but at 14:20, Bodur dazzled the home crowd of over 300 fans by putting Swarthmore up 13 points (34-21).
Swarthmore will host Franklin & Marshall this Saturday, January 31st. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
