Blue Jays Take Off Early to Pass Garnet
BALTIMORE -- Garnet senior Melissa Grigsby led Swarthmore with 17 points and sophomore Kathryn Stockbower added her 14th double-double of the season, but road-weary Swarthmore dropped a 67-59 decision to Johns Hopkins in Centennial basketball action Saturday afternoon at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
Swarthmore (7-8, 4-4 CC) was led by Grigsby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East), who tied a career-high in points while dishing out three helpers to her teammates. Stockbower (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) registered her 35th career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman wing Genny Pezzola (Oakland, Calif. / St. Mary’s College HS) had a strong game with a career-high 10 points off the bench for Swarthmore.
Johns Hopkins (6-8, 4-3 CC) only trailed at one point -- a one-point Garnet lead in the first four minutes of the game. JHU turned around to score six straight points, leading for the remainder of the game. Swarthmore came within two points twice in the first half but the Blue Jays finished the half strong, leading 32-24 before heading into the locker rooms.
Even though both the Garnet and the Blue Jays both scored 35 point in the second half, Hopkins took advantage of their early success in the first half to come away with the Conference win.
The Blue Jays were led by sophomore Lyndsay Burton, who registered a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds. It was the third game in a row that Burton has topped 20 points.
Swarthmore will wrap-up their three-game road trip by traveling to Chestertown, Maryland. The Garnet will take on surprising Washington College on Tuesday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. Swarthmore returns home on Sat., January 24 for a 1:00 p.m. tilt with Ursinus.
