Whittier Walks Past Garnet

WHITTIER, Calif. -- The hometown Whittier Poets used a 9-0 second-half run to build a late-game cushion against the Swarthmore men's basketball team, holding on for a 75-63 victory on the second day of action at the Purple and Gold Classic Sunday evening.

Garnet junior forward Danny Walker (Westbury, N.Y. / Westbury) broke out for a team- and career-high 21 points as Swarthmore dipped to 1-7 on the season.  Sophomore guard Ryan Carmichael (Portland, Maine / Portland) also set a new high-water mark, dropping in 18 points for the Garnet.

The Poets (5-5) won their third straight game behind a game-high 24 points from senior forward Michael Archuleta and a 41-30 rebound advantage.

Walker returned to the starting lineup Sunday evening in southern California and played with new-found vigor, hitting 7-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.  Walker also grabbed a career-best nine rebounds while making four steals.
