Stockbower Doubles Trouble in California

WHITTIER, Calif. -- Forward Kathryn Stockbower '11 posted her ninth double-double of the season, leading Swarthmore women's basketball to a 60-49 win over Castleton (Vt.) State Sunday afternoon at the 26th annual Purple and Gold Classic in southern California.

Stockbower (Fort Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) recorded team-highs with 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Garnet evened their season record at 5-5 on the second day of competition on the campus of Whittier College.

Swarthmore returned to the Los Angeles-area for the second time in six years, holding a 4-4 mark in those two appearances.  Their last victory in California was a 62-41 win at Occidental on January 2, 2004 on the back of a 20-point effort by two-time All-American guard Katie Robinson ’04.

Sunday afternoon saw another Swarthmore senior guard find comfort in the California culture.  Captain Melissa Grigbsy (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) tallied 15 points against the Spartans (5-5), hitting double-digits for the fifth time this season.

The Garnet return east early this week, making a stop in Lancaster, Pa. for a Centennial contest at Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, Jan. 7.  Swarthmore will host consecutive home games in the next 10 days, taking on Dickinson (Jan. 10) and McDaniel (Jan. 13).
