SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet junior forward Danny Walker tallied a career-high 19 points as Swarthmore fell to visiting Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Tarble Pavilion.
The Blue Jays improve to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial while Swarthmore slips to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Conference.
Johns Hopkins reeled off a 7-0 run at the start of the second half, taking a 40-33 lead at 17:33. Swarthmore countered with a 13-6 run, tying the score at 46-46 after a driving lay-up by Walker. Garnet sophomore guard Ryan Carmichael (Portland, Maine / Portland) drilled an elbow jumper at 9:57, tying the game at 50-all.
Blue Jay power forward Andrew Farber-Miller used his size advantage in the paint, scoring six straight points to give the visitors some breathing room. Six minutes later, Farber-Miller hit a jump hook and sank the ensuing free-throw, completing a three-point play to put the Blue Jays ahead 65-56 with under three to play. A decided advantage at the free throw line (25 conversions to Swarthmore’s nine) allowed the Blue Jays to lock up their first Conference win of the year.
Pat O’Connell led Hopkins with 13 points while Adam Baumgartner added 12 points and Farber-Miller finished with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Walker (Westbury, N.Y. / Westbury) (pictured right) was the best player on the court Saturday afternoon, hitting eight of his 11 attempts from the field. He was able to get to the rim with ease and fired up the Tarble Pavilion with a thunderous two-handed dunk in the second half. Senior forward Raul Ordonez (Miami, Fla. / Belen Jesuit) was the other Garnet in double figures, scoring 11 points.
Swarthmore was in control early, jumping out to a 9-5 lead following a triple by freshman wing Marc Rogalski (Franklin Lakes, N.J. / Bergen Catholic) at 14:50. The Swarthmore outside shooting continued carry the offensive attack early on. Junior Matt Allen (Seattle, Wash. / Lakeside) nailed three-pointers on back-to-back possessions around the six-minute mark, putting his squad in front, 27-23.
Hopkins would fight back with O’Connell sank a last-second jumper in the first half, sending the teams to the locker room with the score 33-33.
Swarthmore concludes its first semester schedule on Tuesday, December 9 with an 8:00 p.m. non-conference battle with Moravian. The Garnet men will take the court following the women’s game, set to tip at 6:00 p.m.
