Garnet, Dips Fit To Be Tied
LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's soccer concluded the 2008 regular season with its 10th shutout of the season, fighting to a 0-0 double overtime tie at Franklin & Marshall Saturday morning.
A rather pedestrian first half ended in a scoreless tie with the Diplomats holding a 3-1 shot advantage.
The second half saw each team develop solid scoring chances. In the 70th minute, Garnet freshman forward Emily Coleman (New Haven, Ct. / Choate Rosemary Hall) got inside the F&M goalkeeper and headed a cross off the bottom of the cross bar. The ball ricocheted straight down and the Diplomats were able to clear it away.
Franklin & Marshall countered back up the field getting a one-on-one with Swarthmore goalkeeper Lauren Walker (Fallston, Md. / The Hotchkiss School [CT]). Walker charged out and blocked away good scoring chance.
With ten minutes left a Dips cross evaded a leaping Walker. Garnet center back Cait Mullarkey (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline Academy) streaked in a cleared the ball from Swarthmore’s penalty area.
The first overtime featured one shot but the Garnet pressed on in the second frame, recording five shots to just two for the Diplomats (8-4-3 overall, 4-3-3 CC).
The Garnet conclude the regular season with a 9-3-4 overall record, posting a 5-1-4 mark in the Centennial Conference. The Swarthmore women are now pointed towards the Conference championships to be played in Baltimore for the third consecutive season; complete seeds and scheduling information will be released on Monday.
