California Dream Ends for Swat
REDLANDS, Calif. -- The University of Redlands women's soccer remained perfect at home, defeating visiting Swarthmore, 3-0, on Monday evening.
The Garnet (8-3 overall) suffered their first defeat in October and just the first set-back in the last six matches.
Unseasonably cold weather followed Swarthmore 2,700 miles west and unfortunately the potent offense (second in the Centennial with 2.1 goals per game entering Monday’s action) did not follow.
The hometown Bulldogs (8-4-1), ranked as high as 18th in Division III this season, took control of the contest in the 18th minute as midfielder Breann Puchalski converted a penalty kick opportunity for the first goal.
Redlands scored a second goal six minutes later as midfielder Becky Willis threaded a pass to Jessi Hoyt, who expertly one-touched the ball into the net at 23:31.
The Bulldogs notched a third score on another impressive effort. Defender Maddy Phillips scored in the 54th minute off a deep cross from midfielder Leslie Horner.
All four goalkeepers in uniform saw action. Swarthmore senior Lauren Walker (Fallston, Md. / The Hotchkiss School [CT]) made three saves in the first half while reserve Marie Mutryn '12 (Niskayuna, N.Y. / Niskayuna) minded the net in the second period, posting one stop. Bulldogs senior Tenley Rawlings stopped two Swarthmore shots in 78 minutes of action while sophomore Bailey Hughes contributed one stop during the remaining 12 minutes.
Swarthmore arrives back in Philadelphia on Tuesday and immediately faces tough Centennial competition, hosting Muhlenberg on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
