Mules Trot Past Garnet
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore outside hitters Jen Wang and Genny Pezzola tallied 17 kills apiece but it was not enough to down visiting Muhlenberg Tuesday night. The Mules rallied after a game-one loss, winning 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22) over the Garnet in Centennial volleyball action at Tarble Pavilion.
The Garnet dip to 5-14 overall and 1-3 in the Centennial while the Mules surged to 12-7 overall (2-3 in the Conference).
On Tuesday night, Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) notched a double-double (also added 11 digs) and is closing in on the school record for kills (1151 held by Erica George ’07)--Wang has amassed 1,092 kills.
Pezzola (Oakland, Calif. / St. Mary’s College HS) continued her impressive first-year campaign, posting 21 digs and five service aces to go along with her 17 kills. She entered the week as the Conference leader with 0.63 aces per set and ranked third in digs (4.11 per set) and sixth in kills (3.15 per set). Classmate Hillary Santana (South Lake Tahoe, Calif. / South Tahoe) led the Garnet defense with a match-high 26 digs while junior setter Kearney Bangs (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) registered 40 assists.
The Garnet hit the road this Saturday, Oct. 11, traveling west to Carlisile, Pa. to take on the Dickinson Red Devils at 12:00 p.m. Both teams will participate in the conference-wide initiative, Dig for a Cure, raising money in the fight against cancer.
