Garnet Roll on Lucky No. 3
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Swarthmore senior midfielder Yoi Tibbetts scored his second game-winner of the season in Swarthmore's 3-0 win at Gettysburg late Saturday evening to pick up their third Centennial Conference win of the season.
The Garnet (8-2-1, 3-1 CC) defeated the Bullets (4-4-3, 1-2-1 CC) for just the second time in the last 16 meetings and remained in a second-place tie with Dickinson in the Centennial standings.
After a scoreless first half with only nine shots from both sides, the crowd at Clark Field saw a much more physical game (the teams combined for 27 fouls and five yellow cards).
Swarthmore was awared a corner kick at 61:35, which was sent in by senior midfielder Ladule Lako Lo Sarah (Davis, Calif. / Claremont). Senior captain Jeff Kushner (Norristown, Pa. / Methacton) got a head on the ball and flicked it onto Tibbetts (Sandwich, Mass. / Sandwich), who sent the ball sailing through the net. Both Lako Lo Sarah and Kushner were credited with assists.
Garnet captain Dylan Langley ‘10 (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolani School) marked his fourth goal of the season off a pass from Lako Lo Sarah, making the score 2-0 at 66:47.
Swarthmore freshman forward David Sterngold (Muncy, Pa. / Muncy) scored the final goal of the game in the 79th minute. He dribbled past two defenders and shot inside the left post at 79:04 for his fourth goal of the season.
Swarthmore senior goalkeeper Jason Thrope (Port Washington, N.Y. / Schreiber), making his first career start in net, collected two saves and marked his first career shutout.
With his two assists, Lako Lo Sarah moved up the ladder on the program’s history books. He is now tied with three other Garnet players in fifth place with 12 assists.
The Garnet will return home on Saturday, October 11th to host Ursinus in a Centennial Conference match-up set to start at 7:00 p.m.
