Garnet Remain Undaunted, Top Lions

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet sophomore Elizabeth Mills scored both goals as the Swarthmore women's soccer team remained undefeated with a 2-0 win over Albright at warm Clothier Field Friday night.

The Garnet (3-0-0) run their unbeaten streak to nine in a row, dating back to last season. Swarthmore has not allowed a goal in nearly 800 minutes, winning 16 of its last 17 home matches.

Mills (San Diego, Calif. / The Bishop's School) camed off the bench to post two scores for the second consecutive game, becoming the second player in the Centennial to amass four goals in 2008 (Renee Dessimone from Muhlenberg was the first). Mills entered the game in the 19th minute and made her mark immediately putting Swarthmore up 1-0 with a goal at 21:04. Classmate Kelsey Cline (Stanwood, Wash. / Stanwood) assisted on the play.

The Garnet continued to barrage the Albright defense with shots, holding a 25-2 advantage in the first half. Lions goalkeeper Heather Fitzgerald had other ideas, making eight saves to keep the score 1-0 into the intermission.

Swarthmore continued the aggressive play up top in the second half, drawing a penalty kick in the opening minutes of the second half. Fitzgerald made another big save on the Garnet attempt and the score remained locked at 1-0.

Mills and her Swarthmore teammates continued to fire away at the Albright goal, getting an insurance goal in the 60th minute. Garnet defender Laura Bolger '11 (Centerport, N.Y. / Harborfields) made a quick chip over the goalie and the speedy Mills found the back of the net.

Swarthmore completed the night, highlighted by the annual Youth Soccer Month celebrations, with a 38-3 shot advantage. Senior goalkeeper Lauren Walker (Fallston, Md. / The Hotchkiss School [CT]) posted two saves in 69 minutes of action and freshman net-minder Marie Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) finised off the combined shut-out.

The Garnet host Eastern next Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:00 p.m., continuing the Youth Soccer Month celebration at Clothier Field.
