Swarthmore Sweeps Swat Kick Classic, Five Named All-Tournament

SWARTHMORE, Pa. All-Tournament selections Megan Colombo, Elizabeth Mills and Samantha Song scored two goals each as the host Garnet picked up a pair of victories at the 13th annual Swat Kick Classic this weekend.

Swarthmore defeated Farmingdale State 5-0 on Saturday afternoon and then came back with a 3-0 victory over Moravian (1-1) on Sunday. Stevens Institute of Technology (1-1) earned a 3-0 win over Farmingdale State (0-2) on Sunday after suffering a heart-breaking 2-1 double-overtime loss at the hands of Moravian Saturday night.

Mills (San Diego, Calif. / The Bishop's School), a sophomore midfielder (pictured above) came off the bench to score two goals to give Swarthmore the final advantage.

Stevens controlled the action in the Sunday's first match, out-shooting the Rams 28-3 on the way to the team's first victory of the season. Ducks senior midfielder Salme Cook (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) scored her second goal of the weekend and added an assist to earn All-Tournament status.

In the first day, Swarthmore got a two goals apiece from Colombo (Arcadia, Calif./ Arcadia), a sophomore forward and freshman forward Song (San Francisco, Calif. / San Francisco Univ. HS) on their way to the 5-0 win over Farmingdale State, the 13th consecutive season opening win for the Garnet. Garnet defender Laura Bolger (Centerport, N.Y. / Harborfields), also an All-Tournament selection, added a goal and an assist while Swarthmore goalkeepers Lauren Walker '09 (Fallston, Md. / The Hotchkiss School [CT]) and Marie Mutryn '12 (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) combined for the shutout.

Moravian freshman forward Arielle Caldas (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) broke a 1-1 tie in the 107th minute of the Saturday nightcap, finishing off a pass from All-Tournament forward Alessandra Valdetara (Butler, N.J. / Butler) to give the Greyhounds a season-opening victory over Stevens Institute of Technology.

Valdetara scored the opening goal of the muggy, and buggy, evening alongside Crum Creek, tip-toeing along the end line before finding a hole on the inside post at 19:10. The Ducks (1-0) tied the game early in the second half, when Cook hammered a ball off her laces into the upper left at 55:37.

Moravian senior goalkeeper Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, Pa. / Pennridge) kept Stevens at bay, posting 10 saves. Corrigan was selected All-Tournament for her efforts between the posts.
