Last Minute Goal for a Garnet Win

MADISON, N.J. -- Swarthmore field hockey (1-0) opened their season with a last minute goal from Natalie Stone '09, winning 4-3 over Roanoke (0-1) during the Drew Fall Festival on the campus of Drew University.

Although the Garnet out shot the Maroons in the first half by a tally of 11-3, it was junior Emily Huston (Arlington, Va. / Washington-Lee) who scored the only goal with 22:51 left on the clock for Roanoke.

Second half scoring started with Garnet midfielder Ashley Gunter '09 (Crisfield, Md. / Worcester Prep) setting up Stone (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select School) to drill one past the goalie, knotting up the score at one a piece with 29:03 showing on the clock.

The Maroons got back-to-back goals from junior Mariah Vietri (Jamestown, R.I. / Rocky Hill) and senior Emily Horner (Long Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) to take the lead, 3-1, with twelve minutes left in the regulation. Vietri's goal was unassisted while Horner took advantage of a penalty to notch her first goal of the season.

Swarthmore's second goal was set-up by forward Sophia Ferguson '11 (Brookline, Mass. / The Winsor School), who found junior Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conrad) to deliver the final efforts, making the score 3-2. Garnet midfielder Hadley Roach '11 (Middletown, Del. / St. Andrew's School) equalized the score at three goals for each side with 4:38 glowing on the score board. The nail-biter ended when Stone scored the game-winner for the Garnet with only ten seconds left in the game making the final score to 4-3.

Stone's goal made a winner of first-year head coach Lauren Fuchs, who recently took over the reigns of the storied Swarthmore field hockey program.

First-year Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmought, Mass. / Nauset Regional) collected 11 saves while in goal for the Maroons. Garnet net minder Katie Ashmore '11 (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) posted two saves for the afternoon.

The Garnet will stay over night in Madison to complete the final day of the Drew Fall Festival when they take on Cabrini University at 12:00 p.m.
