Zach Saves the Day
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore junior captain Zach Weimer kept the Garnet (1-0-1) in the 0-0 double overtime tie against Richard Stockton (1-0-1) with strong goaltending on Saturday at the 11th annual Garnet Alumni Classic held at Clothier Field.
With the finals seconds of the match ticking away, Weimer (Rutledge, Pa. / Friends Central) (pictured left) faced a 1-on-1 opportunity but denied the shot with a kick-save. The Garnet goalie had made similar save in the first half, denying a low Osprey header with a one-handed stop on the near post. Weimer marked his first shut-out of the season, tallying five saves; while the team notched their second shut-out in two days.
The result of failed scoring chances from both sides set up the destined overtime. The slow paced offensive play resulted in the final 0-0 tie.
In the third overtime game of the 2008 Garnet Alumni Classic, the Widener Pride (0-2) fell to Skidmore (1-1) by a 2-1 score at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium. Senior Pat Phelan (Wallingford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) scored in the 19th minute for the Thoroughbreds, who looked to be in control. But Widener sophomore Brian James (Perkasie, Pa. / Pennridge) knotted the game with 25 seconds left in regulation. The game ended when Thoroughbred Dan von Allmen (Souderton, Pa. / Souderton) drilled home a shot past off a feed from sophomore Mat Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass. / Cambridge Rindge and Latin).
The Swarthmore men's soccer team continue their non-conference play Saturday, September 7th when they host St. Mary's College (Md.) at 7:00 p.m.
