Garnet Pair Named Scholar Athletes, Selected for North/South Game
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet seniors Frank Mazzucco and Dan Sartori were among 61 lacrosse players recently named Scholar All-Americans by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). Both men were also tabbed as alternates for the 2008 USILA Division III North-South Senior All-Star Game.
Mazzucco (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow), a two-time captain and four-year starter in goal, was named second-team All-Centennial this season and led the Garnet to the E.C.A.C. Metro/South Region Championship game. He will graduate this weekend with a history and political science double major and is headed to Vietnam to teach English.
Sartori (Darien, Conn. / Darien), a team captain and also a four-year starter, led a Swarthmore defensive unit that finished third in the Centennial Conference with a 7.72 goals-against average. He was named second-team All-Centennial for his efforts, becoming the first Swarthmore male in eight years to make All-Conference twice (honorable mention in 2007). Sartori, biology and economics double major, begins work in the pediatric endocrinology laboratory at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia following graduation.
In 1989, the USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. In order for a student-athlete to be selected as a Scholar All-American, he must be a Division I, II or III All-American or be a member of the North-South All-Star team. In addition, he must be a senior with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and have behaved both on and off the field in a manner that has brought credit to himself, his institution and to collegiate lacrosse.
Mazzucco and Sartori, the top players on Swarthmore team that posted the most wins since 1985, also earned selections for the 67th annual North-South game held on Harvard Stadium on May 23.
Mazzucco received a last-minute invitation to suit up and became the first Garnet to play in the prestigious All-Star game since midfielder Tim Chryssikos ’05. He appeared in the second half, posting 11 saves as the South made a fourth-period comeback, scoring the game-winner with just 10 seconds remaining.
Swarthmore completed the 2008 season with a 9-8 record, including a perfect 7-0 mark in non-conference action, and made its third appearance in the E.C.A.C. Metro/South Championship game in the last nine seasons.
