Two Garnet Women Named All-Centennial
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore College junior Christine Sendelsky and sophomore Kathryn Riley have been named to the 2008 All-Centennial Conference team. Riley was a first-team selection and Sendelsky received a spot on the second team, as voted on by the conference head coaches.
Riley (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) repeats as a first-team selection at pitcher after tallying eight wins in 10 Conference starts, posting 72 strikeouts with just nine walks in 77.2 innings pitched. She ranked second in wins, strikeouts, opponents’ batting average (.189) and shutouts (three) while finishing third with a 1.17 ERA. Riley posted an overall record of 16-7 with a 1.74 ERA, striking out 152 batters while walking 23 in 156.2 innings. She tossed two no-hitters this season, setting new school records for strikeouts, shutouts (eight) and innings pitched while tying the College mark for wins, set by Barbara Schaefer ’90.
Riley earned three weekly Conference honors during the 2008 season. She was named Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 24, received Player of the Week honors on March 31, and was selected as Pitcher of the Week on April 15.
Riley is the second player in school history to make the first team twice—in 2007 she was the 26th freshman in Centennial history to earn the distinction.
Sendelsky (Edison, N.J. / John P. Stevens), a team captain, was named All-Centennial for a school-record third time (she was First-Team in 2006 and 2007). Sendelsky started all 37 games at second base for the Garnet, hitting .322 with 34 hits, eight doubles and 16 RBIs. Her glove was steady as well, committing just one error in 77 chances in the field for a .987 fielding percentage, tops amongst Centennial second basemen.
Swarthmore (21-16 overall, 10-6 Centennial) topped the 20-win mark and earned a Centennial playoff berth for the third consecutive season.
