Garnet Womens Lacrosse Plays For a Cause
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore women's lacrosse, along with neighboring Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges, hosted the 2008 Tri-Co Women's Lacrosse Invitational over the weekend of Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16, raising over $6,000 to benefit the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.
Six teams, including Moravian, Alvernia and Gwynedd-Mercy, participated in two games over the weekend, collecting donations for each goal scored.
All donations from the goal-a-thon, and the proceeds from Alex's Lemonade Stand which provided various concessions at all games during the weekend, were pledged to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. After the two days of games, the final goal count was 145 goals with a total of $6,297 collected; all of the money went towards the fight to find a cure for childhood cancer.
"Our fundraising efforts where more successful than expected," expressed Swarthmore women's lacrosse head coach Karen Borbee. "It was great to have six different lacrosse teams all work together for such a great cause."
Each of the three host teams took turns working the lemonade stand during the weekend. "Working the lemonade stand with Haverford and Bryn Mawr really gave us a sense of our tri-college strength," said Swarthmore sophomore midfielder Alex Gilbert-Bono. "It was fun to work with them as opposed to play against them,"
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is a unique foundation that has evolved from a young cancer patient's front yard lemonade stand to a nationwide fundraising movement for childhood cancer. Since Alexandra "Alex" Scott (1996-2004) set up her first front yard stand, more than $10 million has been raised for childhood cancer research be Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.
"We teamed up with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation since the organization originated here in Delaware (Pa.) County and has grown to be a national fundraising effort for childhood cancer research," explained Borbee.
