Mullarkey Breaks Steeplechase Record
EWING, N.J. -- Cait Mullarkey '09 topped the Swarthmore 3,000-meter steeplechase top-ten list as the Garnet track and field team competed at the New Jersey Invite Saturday afternoon.
Mullarkey (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline Academy) ran a personal best while topping the Swarthmore record books with an 11:20.25 race-time in the 3,000 steeplechase. She beat her previous record of 11:42.42 set at the 2007 Last Chance Meet hosted at Swarthmore.
Sophomore Nyika Corbett (Myrtle Point, Ore. / Myrtle Point) placed third in the women’s 1,500 run with a personal best 4:51.09 finish-time. Corbett entered the Swarthmore top ten list at ninth place with her time.
During the women’s 800 meter run three Garnet hares ran their season’s best runs. Lauren Deluca ’10 (Lusby, Md. / Patuxent) placed ninth overall with a race-time 2:23.88 while Bess Ritter ’09 (Quaker Hill, Conn. / Wasterford) crossed the line at 2:34.67 and Faith Pampel ’09 (Little Silver, N.J. / Red Bank Regional) finished at 2:36.15.
With a 19:12.66 finish-time Caitlin Russell (Mountain View, Calif. / Los Altos) placed fourth overall in the women’s 5,000 meter run.
Sophomore Natalie Degaiffier (Washington, D.C. / Washington International) had a season’s best 4.10 meter leap in the women’s long jump.
In the men’s 800, three more runners registered three season best times, Dan Kurtz ’11 (Melrose, Mass. / Melrose) crossed the line at 2:06.98, Seth Green ’10 (Katanah, N.Y. / John Jay) ran a 2:10.87 and Alex Breslow ’11 (Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) picked up a 2:26.26 race-time.
Senior Ross Weller (McConnellsburg, Pa. / Mercersburg) placed fifth with a race-time of 4:08.29, which qualified him to race in the upcoming Centennial Conference Championship in the 1,500 meter run.
Senior Jon Shoop (Reno, Nev. / Incline) also qualified for the Championships 5,000 meter run with a 15.59.84 time.
In the 400 meter hurdles Chris Mayer-Bacon ’11 (South Jersey, N.J. / Gateway Regional) finished at 1:02.45 for a season best.
The Garnet will travel to Chester, Pa. next to compete in the Widener Invite at Widener University over April 18-19.
