Garnet Dodge Bullets
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- In their fifth Centennial Conference match of the season, the Swarthmore men's tennis team breezed by the Gettysburg College Bullets in a 9-0 shut out.
In doubles play, the Bullets missed the mark, the Garnet men sweeping all three matches. Senior Jon Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolani School) and junior Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingston, RI / South Kingston) lead the charge for the Garnet at No. 1 doubles, handily defeating Gettysburg’s Derin Wilson and Mike Leary in an 8-4 match. After a hard fought battle at No. 3 doubles, freshman Mark Wee (Syosset, NY / Syosset) and sophomore Justin diFeliciantonio (Columbus, Ga. / Hardaway) clinched the victory in a close 9-8 (1) match.
The Bullets shot blanks again in singles play, with Garnet junior JJ England (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) chalking up a quick 30-minute 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gettysburg’s Mike Leary at No. 3 singles. At No. 1, Lo also made quick work of his opponent, Gettysburg’s Dale Beshore, in an exciting 6-3, 6-0 win. The last to leave the courts, Wee faced off against Gettysburg’s Kevin Raynes, securing the 9-0 shut out in a 6-3, 6-3 triumph.
On Sunday, the Garnet men will travel to Westminster, Maryland to take on the McDaniel Green Terror at 1:00 p.m.
