Vachal Throws Down Hat Trick, Terror Tame Garnet
WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Swarthmore freshman Amy Vachal resumed her high-scoring ways, posting her fifth hat trick of the season as the Garnet fell at Centennial-foe McDaniel, 19-7, in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
The Garnet fall to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in the tough Centennial Conference (three teams rank in the top-20 in the nation) while the Green Terror improve to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the Centennial.
Garnet freshman midfielder Emily Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) scored the first Swarthmore goal at the 20:25 mark and Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) followed with her first goal of the afternoon at 16:47, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
McDaniel would add seven of the next nine goals to take an 11-4 lead at the intermission. Vachal and junior Marissa Schaffer (Moreland Hills, Ohio / Laurel School) produced the other Garnet goals in the half.
Vachal added a free-position goal midway through the second half, bringing her season total to 28 (tops on the team). She is tied for the most goals scored by a first-year player in the Centennial (Haverford’s Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds also has 28 goals).
Senior midfielder Megan Sanborn (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School) posted an assist for the Garnet while collecting a game-high five draw controls. Schaffer finished the day with two goals, giving her 18 on the season.
Swarthmore goalie Susannah Blair ’08 (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day) posted nine saves in over 48 minutes of action while sophomore Allison Grein (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) added a save in relief of Blair.
Swarthmore travels to Washington (Md.) on Tuesday evening for a 7:00 p.m. Centennial match-up before returning home on Saturday, April 12 to host Muhlenberg at 1:00 p.m.
