Young Tallies Pair, Mules Down Swarthmore
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Garnet midfielder Ben Young scored two goals as visiting Swarthmore fell to Muhlenberg 15-5 in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
Swarthmore (4-4 overall, 0-4 CC) tallied the first score of the afternoon as defender Drew Bonessa ’08 (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shady Side Academy) scooped up a ground ball and took it all the way to the goal, scoring his first goal of the season at 7:45. Bonessa also led the Garnet with five groundballs.
The Mules (3-4 overall, 1-3 CC) struck back for two goals to hold a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
The Garnet evened things up at the start of the second period, capitalizing on an extra-man opportunity as Young (Washington, D.C. / St. Alban’s) scored at 14:40 off a feed from sophomore attack Gavin Musynske (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park). It is Young’s third goal of the season.
Muhlenberg responded with two goals in 19 seconds to take a 4-2 lead mid-way through the second period. The Mules added an extra-man goal at 3:58 when freshman attack Brent Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) scored off a pass from senior midfielder Kyle Farris (Pottstown, Pa. / Pottsgrove) and maintained a 5-2 lead into halftime.
The Mules offense took control of the game in the second half, scoring three goals in the third period and then seven in the fourth. Farris tallied three goals and an assist on the day while junior Nick Fletcher (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow), Siebold and Cade McCarthy (South Salem, N.Y. / John Jay) added two goals each.
The Garnet also goals from junior midfielder Stelios Wilson (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) and sophomore attack Anthony Phalen (Needham, Mass. / Needham). It was Wilson’s team-leading 14th goal of the season and 28th of his career. Phalen now has nine goals in 2008, third on the Swarthmore squad.
Muhlenberg held a 41-23 shot advantage and won 12 face-offs to Swarthmore’s 11. The Garnet edged the Mules 31-29 in ground balls.
Swarthmore goalie Frank Mazzucco (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow) made 14 saves while Muhlenberg netminder Andrew Bell (Summit, N.J. / Summit) posted six saves.
The Garnet continue a three-game road trip with a non-conference game at Goucher this Wednesday, April 2 at 4:00 p.m. Swarthmore returns home to Clothier Field on Wed., April 9 when 5th-ranked Washington (Md.) visits for a 7:00 p.m. Centennial match-up.
