Winds Swirl on Day One of McDaniel Invite
ABBOTTSTOWN, Pa. -- The Swarthmore golf team encountered blustery conditions in central Pennsylvania during the first day of the 2008 McDaniel Invitational Saturday morning.
The Garnet was 11th out of 12 schools at conclusion of the first round, posting a team score of 359 at the par-72, 6713-yard Bridges Golf Club, site of the 2008 Centennial Conference Championships. St. John Fisher (N.Y.) led with a 315 while Susquehanna (318) and Franklin & Marshall (318) rounded out the top three.
Swarthmore junior Michael Bernasek (Fairfield, Conn. / Hopkins School) led the Garnet with an 84, good enough to make the top-30. Sophomore Jeffrey Lazarus (Woodcliffe, N.J. / Pascack Hills) was next with an 89 while senior Darren Johnson (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) carded a 90.
The Garnet tee-off Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. for the second round of competition. Swarthmore returns home to Rolling Green Country Club, facing four local schools in a match set to being at 1:00 p.m.
