Garnet Win Third Straight in Centennial Play
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore men's tennis team emerged victorious again today in a hard fought 7-2 victory over the Dickinson College Red Devils, ranked 20th in the Atlantic South region.
The Garnet, ranked 12th in the latest ITA poll, opened the match with impressive doubles play, sweeping all three doubles matches in a short 30 minutes. Senior captain Jonathan Lo (Honolulu, Hawaii / Iolaui School) and junior Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingstown, R.I. / South Kingstown) once again led the charge with an 8-3 victory over Ross Anstaett and Bo Marshall in the No. 1 doubles position. The junior team of JJ England (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla / The Benjamin School) and Mark Greenburg (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Phoenix Country Day) followed close behind with another 8-3 victory over Hunter Holbrook and Dickinson’s captain Pavel Hejsek, while freshman Mark Wee (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) and sophomore Justin diFeliciantonio (Columbus, Ga. / Hardaway) made short work of their opponents Matt Wood and Trevor Heck with an 8-2 showing at No. 3 doubles.
Singles play started out slowly for the Garnet, with No. 1 Lo, No. 2 Shaughnessy, and No.3 Wee all dropping their first sets. However, Lo and Shaughnessy both rallied to impressive three-set victories, with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over Anstaett and a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Marshall. England won a hard fought, three-hour match at the No. 4 position over Heck, winning two straight tiebreakers to secure a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7 triumph. diFeliciantonio, at No. 6, was the only Garnet singles player to win in straight sets, with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 downing of Dickinson’s Reventhal.
The Garnet men will return to action on Saturday, March 29th for a crucial regional match against Washington & Lee, ranked sixth in the Atlantic South.
