Garnet Sophomores Earn Centennial Recognition

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore right-hander Zach Sinemus has been named Pitcher of the Week while classmate Gavin Musynske was named the Centennial Conference Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week by the Centennial Conference for the week of March 10-16, as announced by the Conference office on March 18.

Musynske (Floral Park, NY / Floral Park), an attack, had four goals and two assists in the 9-6 win vs. St. Mary's College on March 12, and had two goals and four assists in the 13-4 triumph vs. New England College on March 15th. HeGavin Musynske ‘10 leads the team with a total of 19 points (10 goals, 9 assists) in four games thus far this season.

Musynske (left), an economics major, is the just the third Garnet player to receive a weekly honor in the last twelve years. Goaltender Frank Mazzucco ’08 was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week last season while Andy Place ’96 received the same award in 1996.

The Garnet men's lacrosse squad is off to a 4-0 start, best since 2000 when they started 5-0 and earned an E.C.A.C. playoff berth. They will travel to Ursinus College on March 20 to open Centennial Conference play at 7:00.

Sinemus (Short Hills, N.J. / Millburn), a sophomore, did not allow a run while striking out six batters in 7.1 innings, making five relief appearances for the Garnet during the 2008 spring break trip to Tampa, Fla. He picked up his firstZach Sinemus ‘10 win of the season in an 11-8 win over Cazenovia on March 11 and then earned a save after tossing the final three innings in a combined shut-out over City College of New York, the top hitting team in Division III last season, on March 16.

Sinemus (right), a philosophy and astrophysics double major, has a 0.96 earned-run average (ERA) this season, allowing just one earned run in 9.1 innings with six strikeouts and one walk.

Swarthmore baseball is also off to a strong start in 2007, holding an overall record of 6-3 heading into a pair of non-conference road games at Philadelphia Biblical and Widener.
