Vachal and Schaffer Hold Hat Trick Party

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore freshman Amy Vachal tallied her fourth hat-trick of the season in the 15-4 win against Moravian (2-2) in women's lacrosse action at the 2008 Tri-Co Invitational Sunday afternoon at Clothier Field.

The Garnet (3-2) offense with a 5-0 run to start the game when Vachal (Summerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) scored an unassisted goal at 27:35. Sophomore Alex Gilbert-Bono (Wellesley, Mass. / St. Mark’s) scored two goals in a span of three minutes, she was assisted by Kelsey Hatzell ’09 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) and Marissa Schaffer ’09 (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School), respectively.

Vachal scored her third goal with 24:42 remaining in the half to make the score 5-0--she was assisted by Gilbert-Bono. Schaffer shot one past the Greyhound goalie at 21:22 to mark her seventh goal of the season.

Moravian got on the board with 13:47 remaining when junior Georgia Castellano (Cherry Hills, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) scored an unassisted goal.

Tri-Co ShirtsGarnet midfielder Anna de Regt ’09 (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) notched one in the net at 7:41 to make the score 7-1. Senior Megan Sanborn (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School) assisted on sophomore midfielder Abbe Muller’s (West Hartford, Conn. / Conrad) goal at 7:15 before she found the net to make the score 9-1. With 3:32 remaining in the half, Moravian sophomore Lynda Kauffman (Boothwyn, Pa. / Chichester) picked up her first of two goals in the game to close the half at 9-2.

Castellano scored off a fast break to collect her second goal of the game at 28:35.

Following the Greyhound goal, Swarthmore midfielder Emily Evans ’11 (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) scored unassisted at the 28th minute mark to make the score 10-3. Vachal picked up her game-high fourth goal of the game at 25:43. Scoring her second goal of the game at 24:23, Muller sailed one past the Greyhound goalie. Garnet Abbie Fischer ’08 (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln-Sudbury) score at 18:06 making the score 14-3.

Kauffman scored the final goal for the Greyhounds with 10:18 remaining on the board.

Schaffer completed her third goal of the game with a little more than three minutes remaining to make the final score 15-4 in favor of the Garnet.

The Garnet goalies split the win with Susannah Blair ’08 (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day) collecting 10 saves and Allison Grein ’10 (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) posting a total of three saves. Sophomore Courtney Rosenberg (Cape May, N.J. / Lower Cape May Regional) had 13 saves while between the posts for the Greyhounds.

The Garnet will travel to Widener on Tuesday, March 18 to continue their non-conference schedule play, game time is set for 7:00 pm.
