Gill and Sinemus Share Shutout
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Returning from their spring break trip, Swarthmore baseball (6-3) shut-out the City College of New York 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Clothier Fields.
Garnet sophomore pitchers Jimmy Gill (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) and Zach Sinemus (Short Hills, N.J. / Millburn) shared the shut-out against CCNY, who led all of Division III in hitting last season (.368 team batting average). The Garnet did not give up any free passes from the mound and only had one error. Gill had four strikeouts, three of which came in the second inning when he retired the side. Pitching in relief, Sinemus had two strikeouts and also allowed just two hits, picking up the save.
Senior Travis Allen (Suffield, Conn. / Loomis Chaffee) (left) led the Garnet at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs while scoring one run. Outfielder Scott Dalane ’08 (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and had a run scored. Freshman Ben Schneiderman (Easton, Pa. / Easton) was 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. Third baseman Conor Casey (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
The Garnet pitchers infield was busy as CCNY hitters grounded out 10 times on the day, including a great double play carried out by short stop Thomas Nakamura ’10 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell), second baseman Kevin Kooi ’09 (Lafayette, Calif. / College Preparatory School) and first baseman Matt Corso ’10 (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus).
The last time the Garnet baseball team shut out an opponent was on March 24, 2006 when they defeated Lincoln 15-0 on Clothier Fields.
The Garnet will continue non-conference play when they host Penn State-Berks on Tuesday, March 18th at 3:30 p.m.
