Corso Hits First Career Bomb, Garnet Sweep

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Swarthmore (5-2) baseball team swept Daniel Webster (1-7) with scores of 16-0 and 6-5 on Thursday afternoon at Northwestern Park.First baseman Matt Corso ’10 (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus) hit his first collegiate solo home run to put the Garnet up 4-0 in the first game. Junior second baseman Kevin Kooi (Lafayette, Calif. / College Preparatory School) had four RBIs and one run scored for the Garnet while catcher Ben Mendelson ’08 (Sabbatus, Maine – Lewiston) went 2-4 and had one double, one RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Jimmy Gill (Lewes, Del. - Cape Henlopen) went 2-3 at the plate bringing in two runners and hitting one double.

Andy Allen ’11 (Machester, Maine / St. Dominic) had his first career win, pitching a solid five innings for the Garnet. Making his first collegiate appearance on the mound was freshman Issac Han (Los Angles, Calif. / Damien), pitching a perfect seventh inning and with one strike out. Infielder Wiley Archibald ’10 (Berkeley, Calif. / The College Preparatory School) who was 3-3 for the day, started the seventh with a single to right field and was advanced to second following a sacrifice bunt from Neil Mejia ’11 (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park River Forest).

Infielder James Bernard ’11 (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) had a walk-off hit to bring in Archibald to make the final score to 6-5 in favor of the Garnet in the second game. At the plate, infielder Andy Eisenlhor ’11 (Lower Merion, Pa. / Lower Merion) went 2 for 4, hitting one double with an RBI, while scoring once. Outfielder Scott Dalane ’08 (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) also went 2 for 4 with a run scored and RBI. Freshman Ben Scheiderman (Easton, Pa. / Easton) made his first college start on the mound, pitching five innings. He recorded three strikeouts while giving up just five runs on four hits. Zach Sinemus ’10 (Short Hills, N.J. / Millburn) had his second appearance on the hill, pitching an inning and 1/3 in the second game. Mejia picked up the win, the second of his career, in two-plus innings of work.

Garnet baseball plays their final game of the spring break trip against Centenary on Friday, March 14th -- first pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am.
