Seahawks Fly Past Garnet

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Despite five goals from freshman Amy Vachal, Swarthmore (1-2) fell 21-16 to St. Mary's College of Maryland (5-2) in women’s lacrosse action late Wednesday afternoon.

Garnet midfielders Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) and Abbe Muller ’10 (West Hartford, Conn. – Conard) both scored two goals in the first half of play en route to hat tricks, along with single goals from seniors Abbie Fischer (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln-Sudbury) and Megan Sanborn (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School). Midfielder Anna de Regt ’09 (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) got one past the Seahawk goalie following a pass from Sanborn with 10:21 on the clock to put the Garnet ahead one goal (6-5).

The score evened out again at 6-6 following a goal from St. Mary’s sophomore Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md. / North Harford). Vachal had an unassisted goal at 8:44 to take the lead again with a score of 7-6. The Seahawks picked up four more goals before the half ended with a score of 10-7.

Vachal picked up her third goal of the game making the score 14-9 in favor of the Seahawks with 24:33 on the board. Garnet midfielder Emily Evans ’11 (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) posted her sixth career goal at 23:45, before Muller took advantage of a free position to finish her trio of goals on the afternoon. Even with a Garnet last minute scoring surge of four goals in the final five minutes of the game coming from Vachal (2), De Regt and Marissa Schaffer ’09 (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School), the Seahawks came out on top.

Senior Susannah Blair (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day) corralled nine saves between the posts for the Garnet this afternoon, while St. Mary’s goaltender, freshman Ella Schoming (Westminster, Md. / North Carroll), had 13 saves.

Swarthmore will return home for the 2008 Women’s Lacrosse Tri-Co Invitational on March 15th and 16th. They match up with Gwynedd-Mercy College on March 15th at 4:00 pm.
