McCormick Sets Record, Gettysburg Tops Garnet
GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- Swarthmore senior Ian McCormick broke the program record for career rebounds after posting 11 boards Saturday afternoon, while the Garnet (6-17, 2-14) fell to Gettysburg 69-55 in Centennial Conference men's basketball action in Bream Gymnasium.
McCormick (Seattle, Wash. / University Prep) now has 770 boards in his career, passing Rob Ruffin '92, who grabbed 768. Also making notes in Swarthmore’s history books this afternoon was senior Steve Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge), who collected 11 rebounds (510-career) to earn a position in the 500-rebound club. Senior guard Matt Kurman (Rockville, Md. - Walter Johnson) added 11 points while Wolf notched nine points. Forward Raul Ordonez ’09 (Miami, Fla. - Belen Jesuit Prep.) added 12 rebounds for Swarthmore, which owned a 48-35 advantage on the glass, including a 23-5 surplus on the offensive boards.
Gettysburg junior guard Dan Capkin (Wynnewood, Pa. / Lower Merion) scored 17 of his game-high 19 points in the second half, while classmate Corey Dorsey (Frederick, Md./St. John’s at Prospect Hall) totaled 15 points and six rebounds. Gettysburg (19-3, 14-2) was perfect from the line (14-14), a feat that was last completed by the Bullets on Feb. 7, 2004, when Gettysburg went 12-for-12.
Wolf started the game on the right foot when he went 3-for-3 from the field during a 10-4 Garnet run. Although the Bullets tried to make a run of their own to gain a comfortable lead, the Garnet continued their offensive toughness when they came back to lead the Bullets by nine points with 1:22 left in the first half.
The Garnet held a five-point halftime lead (28-23) as McCormick scored nine of the final 11 points of the half for Swarthmore.
The Bullets came out of the locker room with an 11-4 run to start the second half. The Garnet came within three points of the Bullets with 4:01 on the clock but clutch free-throw shooting sewed up the Gettysburg win. The Bullets finished the game on a 14-3 run, never looking back.
Swarthmore continue their Centennial schedule, traveling to Chestertown, Md. on Wednesday, February 20 to play Washington at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 23 the Garnet will host their final game of the season against long-time foe, Haverford College. The day-long festivities begin with the annual Alumni game at 11:30 a.m. and culminates with Senior Day and the varsity game at 4:00 p.m.
