Think Pink Week at Swarthmore
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The men's and women's basketball teams from Swarthmore and Dickinson College joined the 900-plus teams participating in the Women's Basketball Coaching Associations' (WBCA) "Think Pink" week this past Saturday, February 9.
The WBCA’s “Think Pink” initiative is a global, unified effort raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond--the campaign is being held during the week of February 8-15.
In Tarble Pavilion Saturday afternoon, all four teams suited up in pink shooting-shirts to show their support. The women’s teams also wore pink shoelaces. In continuance of this year’s “Tees for Threes” promotion by Swarthmore Athletics, following every three-pointer, pink t-shirts were thrown into the stands.
The officials overseeing the women’s game showed their support of “Think Pink” with their own initiative: the "Calling for a Cure" campaign where all NCAA women's basketball officials are blowing a pink whistle February 8-17.
Before the games, captains from each team gave a pre-game speech containing information about the “Think Pink” initiative, asking the fans to join them in increasing Breast Cancer Awareness by buying items at the concession stand; during the afternoon double-header over three hundred dollars was raised. The entire amount will be donated to the Kay Yow/ WBCA Cancer Fund.
