Garnet Collect Centennial Win in Overtime

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's basketball team (6-13, 3-10 CC) finished strong in their 68-62 overtime win against Bryn Mawr (4-15, 1-11 CC) during a Centennial match-up on Tuesday evening in Tarble Pavilion.

Three of the Garnet starting players, Karen Berk ’08 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford), Pam Costello ’10 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) and Kathryn Stockbower ’11 (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) score in the double-digits combining for 49 points. Stockbower registered her 16th double-double while scoring 22 points and grabbing 18 rebounds.

Stockbower ‘11 The Garnet started the night out with an 8-2 run, six points came from Stockbower. The home team pushed the score to 21-13 at 10:25 following a good lay up by Stockbower to take their largest lead of the half.

The Owls made it a one point-game at 5:36, following a 3-pointer from senior captain Katie Driscoll (Little Neck, N.Y. / Townsend Harris) to make the score 26-25 in favor of the home team.

Swarthmore ended the half with an offensive surge, going on an 8-4 run to make the score 34-30 Garnet. Stockbower closed the half with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Berk added eight points.

Bryn Mawr junior Jessica Allen (Reading, Pa. / Reading) went for nine points while sophomore Shanika Bridges-Kin (Roxbury, Mass. / English) had eight points of her own.

Stockbower’s three points to start the half extended the Garnet lead to eight points (38-30) at 18:36.

The Owls had a 12-0 unanswered run with 10:58 left on the clock as they gained a four-point lead, 42-38.

The score was tied 52-52 at 3:22 following some back and forth action. The Garnet took the lead following two good free throws from Berk to make the score 54-52. Allen hustled down the court for the Owls, knotting the game with a good jumper; the score was 54 points for each side.

In the final possession of regulation, the Owls called a time-out with 38 seconds left, hoping the set up a play to get the winning basket. But a missed jumper sent the game into overtime with the score 54-54.

In the overtime period, Berk scored half of the 16 Garnet points while junior Melissa Grigsby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) added four points to aid the Swarthmore’s final push.

Allen had a game-high 25 points for the Owls, while Bridges-King had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Berk went 5-for-6 at the line while scoring 17 points, and Costello had 10 points and six rebounds.

Swarthmore continues their Centennial schedule, hosting Dickinson at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 9--both teams are participating in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)’s “Think Pink” week.
