Blue Jays Fly Away with Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's basketball team fell to Johns Hopkins 88-65 in a Centennial Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet started the game out strong, controlling the lead for the first seven minutes of the game. The score was knotted with 11 points for each bench at 12:59. The Blue Jays went on an 11-6 scoring run which drove the score to 41-28 (13-point lead) to close the first half. The Blue Jays’ largest lead followed a good lay up from junior Kristin Philips (Wilmington, Del. / Tower Hill) pushing the score to 77-48 with 4:07 remaining in the game. Swarthmore had a 12-4 run to bring the deficit to 21 points at 1:17 making the score 81-60. The Blue Jays finished the game strong on the offensive side of the court.

Three of the Garnet starters scored in the double digits, Karen Berk ’08 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford), Kathryn Stockbower ’11 (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) and Ceylan Bodur ’11 (Istanbul, Turkey / Robert College) totaled 46 of Swarthmore’s 65 points.

Back in the starting line-up for Swarthmore, Bodur went 7-for-12 at the line, for a team-high 17 points.

Johns Hopkins senior Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, Md. / Bryn Mawr) registered a game-high 18 points while grabbing seven rebounds. While junior Jonay Foster (Chicago, Il. / Oak Park River Forest) had nine points, five steals and four assists.

The Garnet will be back in action when they host Washington College on Tuesday Jan. 22, with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off time.
