Garnet Fall to Bullets
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Gettysburg women's basketball team took an early lead in the first half, defeating Swarthmore 78-58 on Thursday night. Swarthmore guard Laura Popovics '08 (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) scored a season-high 17 points while blocking five shots -- a team-high for the season. She made five three-pointers, which was also a season-high.
The visiting Bullets had a 12-point unanswered run in the first half, shooting 45.5% from the outside the arch. The Garnet trailed 42-19 at halftime. Swarthmore’s undoing came in the first half, when Gettysburg scored at will and opened a 23-point lead entering the second half.
Gettysburg pushed their top lead of the game 65-35 at 10:07 in the second half following is good lay up by senior Megan Hartman (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley), who had nine points in the game.
The Garnet attacked the basket with a 13-1 run bringing the deficit to 18 points at 4:27; the score was now 69-51 Bullets. Gettysburg ended the game containing the Garnet offense to extend their lead to 20 points.
Garnet freshman Kathryn Stockbower (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) is back on the double-double trail scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Stockbower lists fourth on the Centennial scoring list while averaging 18.8 points per game. As of Jan. 13, Stockbower ranks fourth in all of Division III with 13.8 rebounds per game, leading the Conference in rebounding. The forward was recently named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week along with two other Centennial Conference players.
Swarthmore center Summer Miller-Walfish ’11 (San Jose, N.M. / West Las Vegas) entered the top ten Swarthmore season leaders list as the eighth top-blocker--the center has a total of 25 blocked shots for the year. She passed Kim Wright ’84-’85, Kristen Lee ’04-’05 and Lisl Cochran-Bond ’93-’94 who are all tied with 24 total blocks. Miller-Walfish is currently ranked second in the conference in blocks with 1.91 per game.
Senior forward Karen Berk ’08 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) was just one rebound shy of a double-double while scoring 12 points.
Freshman classmates Caitlin Moser (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) and Courtney Fields (Baltimore, Md. / St. Paul’s School for Girls) both scored 12 points for the Bullets. While sophomore Nicole Doranski (Albertson, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) passed the -mark for the season grabbing three rebounds in tonight’s game (102 total).
The Garnet will be back in action when they host Centennial Conference game against Johns Hopkins on Saturday Jan. 19, with a 2:00 p.m. tip-off time.
