Green Terror Fishes Win Over Garnet
WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The McDaniel women's basketball team earned their fifth conference win, defeating Swarthmore 89-71 on Tuesday night. Garnet freshman Summer Miller-Walfish had a career game with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Swarthmore duo, Karen Berk ’08 (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) and Kathryn Stockbower ’11 (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) aided a Garnet’s eight-point run following McDaniel’s first basket to start the game. Green Terror junior Kim Staub (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) hit a jumper to begin a McDaniel comeback with 7:58 on the clock. Following a good lay up on the fast break by sophomore Ali Moreland (Davidsonville, Md./South River) at 4:21, the score was knotted at 23-23.
The Garnet was up by eight points three times during the first half, while the Green Terror had two three-point leads. The half concluded in a tie with 31 points for each bench.
To start the second half McDaniel senior Robin Gregg (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) scored a three-pointer after a steal to give the Green Terror their first lead. Swarthmore made a strong effort with an eight-point run with back-to-back three-pointers from sophomore captain Pam Costello (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford). The offensive surge came at 12:53 to bring the deficit to 52-49. McDaniel finished the game shooting well from the free-throw line to extend their largest lead at 18-points.
Stockbower lists fourth on the scoring list for the Centennial averaging 18.8 ppg. She leads the conference in rebounding averaging 13.8 per game.
Miller-Walfish (San Jose, N.M. / West Las Vegas) is currently ranked second in the conference in blocks with an averages 1.91 block per game.
The Garnet defense contained McDaniel’s top shooter, Gregg (who averages 13.9 ppg), limiting her to only nine points. Moreland, a shooting guard scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Swarthmore will return to Tarble Pavilion on Thursday, Jan. 17 for a Centennial Conference game against Gettysburg; tip-off is schedule for 6:00 p.m.
