Garnet Sail Past Bears

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore swimming convincingly swept away Ursinus Tuesday night at Ware Pool in Centennial Conference action. The women's team won 144-97, while the men's squad triumphed 125-86.

The women improve their record to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the CC, while the men improve to 2-3, 2-1 CC. Swarthmore was victorious in 18 of the 27 events.

Leading the way for the women was Anne Miller ’10 (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) who was part of three wins (200 Medley {1:59.07}, 1000 Freestyle {10:47.77}, and 200 Butterfly {2:14.86}). Miller set a 50 freestyle pool record with her 27.44 time in her leg of the 200 Medley Relay.

Melinda Neal ’11 (Austin, Texas), Julia Wrobel ‘10 (Lawrenceville, N.J. / Lawrence High School), and Chelsea Brett ’11 (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) each won two twice for the Garnet women.

Freshman Santiago Lombo (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) and junior Douglas Gilchrist-Scott (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) were multiple winners for the men.

Sophomore Claire Shelden (Lewistown, Mont. / Fergus) anchored the victory in the 200 medley relay to start out the meet on a good note for the women. The relay was completed in a time of 1:59.07. Other members of the relay included Neal, Stephanie Su ’11 (Parsippany, N.J. / Parsippany Hills) and Miller.

The men also claimed victory in 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.21. Swarthmore team members included Guy Seaton ’10 (Jacksonville Beach, Fla. / Stanton College Prep), Kyle Skolfield ’10 (Liberty Township, Ohio / Seven Hills), Lombo, and Gilchrist-Scott.

The Garnet took control of the meet with victories by Brett and Andrew Frampton ’08 (Silver Spring, Md. / Gonzaga College) in the 200 freestyle, posting times of 2:04.16 and 1:51.74, respectively. In the 200 backstroke, Neal won on the women’s side (1:05.47) and Lombo on the men’s side (57.45).

Senior John Heagy (Coraopolis, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) kept the momentum on Swarthmore’s side with a victory in 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.52. Brian Roth ’08 (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:15.48. Gilchrist-Scott won for the second time with a strong time of 22.83 in the 50 freestyle.

Swarthmore continued to dominate the meet with wins in both the 100 freestyle races with Michael Ahn ’10 (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista High School) (51.03) and Wrobel (57.64) each claiming victory.

Junior Tom Kelleher (Brockton, Mass. / Moses Brown) won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:07.50.

Franny Zhang ’08 (Piscataway, N.J. / The Peddie School) and Sarah Bedolfe ’11 (Dana Point, Calif. / Dana Hills) joined the win parade with solid wins in the 500 Freestyle (5:36.78) and 400 IM (5:08.85) respectively.

The last win of the night for Swarthmore came in the women’s 200 freestyle relay swam by Neal, Wrobel, Jennie Lewis ’08 (Darien, Conn. / Darien), and Brett.

In addition, several swimmers set personal events including Derrick Kao ’11 (Santa Monica, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) (200 freestyle; 1:55.13), Sheldon (200 freestyle; 2:06.44), Wrobel (500 freestyle; 5:38.21), and Lewis (200 butterfly; 2:17.77).

The teams will celebrate their victories over Thanksgiving before heading to Lancaster for the Franklin & Marshall Invite on December 1-2.
