Garnet Open Centennial Season with Win
WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Swarthmore freshman Allison Bishop, sophomore Julia Wrobel and junior Stephen Shymon picked up two individual victories as the Garnet swim teams opened Centennial action at McDaniel on Saturday afternoon. The Swarthmore women prevailed 58-33 while the men picked up their first win of 2007 by a score of 56-30.
The Swarthmore men (1-1, 1-0 CC) opened up the afternoon by winning 200-medley relay. Douglas Gilchrist-Scott ’09, Kyle Skolfield ’10, Sterling Satterfield ’11 and Michael Ahn ’10 took top honors with a time of 1:43.39.
The Garnet women (2-0, 1-0 CC) swept all of the individual freestyle events on the afternoon. Bishop swam 11:23.70 in the 1,000 and 5:40.02 in the 500 event. Finishing first in two events, Wrobel swam strong in both the 100 (57.90) and the 200 (2:04.97). Senior Jennie Lewis completed the freestyles events as the top swimmer in the 50 event with a time of 26.07.
The men made a splash during the conference meet as they won also all the individual freestyle events. Andrew Frampton ’08 claimed victory, swimming a 10:29.69 in the 1,000-event. Swimming in both the 500 (5:01.45) and 200 (1:52.66), Shymon was the only Garnet men’s swimmer to take the top position in two events. With a final time of 50.08 seconds, Gilchrist-Scott took the 100-freestyle for the Garnet while Michael Ahn ’10 swam a 22.77 in the 50 free for the victory.
The 100 butterfly event saw two Swarthmore women break the pool record at McDaniel. Anne Miller ’10 swim a 59.91 to win for the Garnet women (setting the new mark) with classmate Casey Osborn barely a stroke behind in 1:00.65. Also winning the 100-butterfly on the men’s side was Brian Roth ’09 who swam a 54.94 time.
The Garnet won both the men's and women's 100 backstroke events as Allie Jordan '09 swam a 1:05.46 while Guy Seaton '10 won with a time of 1:02.03.
Both swim teams will continue Centennial action traveling to Lancaster, Pa. taking on Franklin & Marshall on Sat., Nov. 10.
