Five Swarthmore Women Named All-Centennial
LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Swarthmore College women's soccer team had five players selected to the 2007 All-Centennial list, following a vote by the conference head coaches. Garnet junior Cait Mullarkey, junior Lauren Walker and freshman Megan Colombo were named to the first team, sophomore Maggie DeLorme was a second-team selection and senior Danielle Tocchet is honorable mention.
Mullarkey, a defender (above), is the leader of a Swarthmore unit that was the last in all of Division III to allow a goal in 2007 (a stretch of 381:34) and ranks 11th in Division III in goals-against average (0.388). She was named Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 17 after the Garnet jumped to a 5-0 start and completed the regular season first in the Centennial in shut outs per game (0.60). Mullarkey, team captain, was recently named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II third-team and was placed on the Conference Academic Honor Roll for the second consecutive year.
This is Mullarkey’s third consecutive first-team selection—she is the first Swarthmore soccer player (only fourth defender in Centennial history) to accomplish the feat.
Walker, a goaltender (right), joins Mullarkey along the stingy Swarthmore backline, ranking 10th in goals-against average and 27th in save percentage (.875) in all of Division III. Walker leads the Centennial in goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts per game (0.47). She was named Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4 after being selected All-Tournament at the 2007 Swat Kick Classic.
Colombo, a forward, led the Garnet in points (18) and goals (seven) while finishing second in assists (four). She finished fifth in the Centennial for points per game (1.20) and recorded her first career hat trick in a 4-0 win over Ursinus on Oct. 17. Colombo was also selected All-Tournament at the Swat Kick Classic.
Colombo is the 16th freshman to make the first team—this is the third consecutive year a Swarthmore first-year has been listed (Mullarkey in 2005, Katie Kanuka ’10 in 2006).
DeLorme, a midfielder (left), makes her second appearance on the All-Centennial team (she was honorable mention in 2006). She started all 15 games this season, recording two assists from a Garnet midfield ranked fourth in the Centennial with 26 shots.
Tocchet, a forward, also earned her second All-Centennial selection—she was honorable mention in 2005. The senior captain finished third on the team in goals (five) and fourth in points (10) while leading the Centennial in game-winning goals (four). Tocchet was named Conference Offensive Player of the Week on two separate occasions (Sept. 4, Oct.3) and was an All-Tournament selection at the Swat Kick Classic. She is currently sixth all-time at Swarthmore with 18 career goals.
Swarthmore has a 12-2-1 overall record at the conclusion of the 2007 regular season, including a 7-2-1 mark in the Centennial Conference. The Garnet women earned a second consecutive playoff appearance and face Ursinus on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in semifinal action of the 2007 Centennial Championships. The team spent five weeks with a national ranking, the first-ever in program history, peaking at #18 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas poll.
