Berk, Garnet Scatter Owls
BRYN MAWR, Pa. - Swarthmore senior middle hitters Karen Berk (Haverford, Pa. / Havertown) and Katherine Gold (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East) combined for 23 kills as the Garnet volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 Centennial Conference win at Bryn Mawr Thursday night. The game scores were 30-26, 30-20 and 30-20.
Swarthmore improved to 7-12 overall and 2-2 in the Conference while the Owls slip to 6-9 overall and 0-6 in the Centennial.
Berk tied her season-high with 12 kills, posting a hitting percentage of .632 (zero errors in 19 attempts) while contributing three blocks. She now has 423 career blocks, placing her fifth all-time in Centennial history--she needs four more blocks to tie Gigi Koundinya from Johns Hopkins for fourth position.
Gold posted her ninth double-figure kills total with 11 in 29 attack attempts.
Swarthmore sophomore setter Kearney Bangs (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) directed the offense with 37 assists while junior libero Erin Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y. / City Honors) led the defense with 25 digs. Heaney also contributed five aces, tying a team-high on the season posted by three other Garnet women.
Swarthmore continues Centennial action this Saturday, Oct. 6, hosting Johns Hopkins at 1:00 p.m. in Tarble Pavilion. Both teams will be participating in "Digging for a Cure", a fundraising effort by the Centennial Conference teams benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
