#19 Garnet Wash Away Shorewomen

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore sophomore forward Katie Kanuka (Ontario, Canada / Holy Trinity) scored two goals as the 19th-ranked Garnet women's soccer team defeated Washington (Md.) 4-0 in Centennial action Tuesday night at Clothier Field.  Swarthmore remains undefeated at 6-0-0 overall
and 2-0-0 in the Centennial while the Shorewomen slip to 0-9-0 overall and 0-3-0 in Conference play.

Almost 200 fans showed up to a seasonably warm night Clothier Field as both teams celebrated the fifth-annual U.S. Youth Soccer Night, an initiative to emphasize soccer as the number one youth participation sport in America and a leading contributor to the healthy lifestyle of millions of America families.

Swarthmore forward Danielle Tocchet '08 (Highland Falls, N.Y. / James I. O'Neill) lit the lamp first for the Garnet, re-directing a shot by sophomore Julia Luongo (Tallahassee, Fla. / Leon) at 3:21.

Katie Kanuka '10 scored two goals in a game for the fourth time in her career.

Washington goalkeeper Megan Russell (Federalsburg, Mary. / Seaford Christian) kept the visitors on the board with 11 saves in the first half.  It is just the second career start for the senior, who normally suits up at forward.

The Garnet maintained the 1-0 lead into the intermission, out-shooting the visitors 27-0.

Kanuka, a third-team All-Region selection and the Centennial's leading scorer in 2006, has battled back from earlier season injuries.  She tallied her first goal of the season at 52:29, heading home a cross from freshman midfielder Kirsten Peterson (Fenton, Mich. / Powers Catholic). Her second score came 3:24 later as she cashed in a left-footed attempt from inside the 18-yard box.

Colombo gathered a loose ball in front of the box at 60:57, took one step and fired in her third goal of the season.

Garnet junior goalkeeper Lauren Walker (Fallston, Mary. / The Hotchkiss School) posted her fourth shutout of the season. Russell made 15 saves for the Shorewomen, a career-high.

The Garnet continue Centennial Conference-play when they visit McDaniel on Sept. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
