Blue Jays Squirt Past Garnet in OT
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Elizabethtown sophomore Megan Angstadt (Oley, Pa. / Oley Valley) scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the visiting Blue Jays defeated Swarthmore 3-2 in non-conference field hockey action Thursday night.
The deciding goal started as a E-town penalty corner directed by Angstadt. The sophomore slid the ball out to Blue Jay midfielder junior Tiffany Vogel (Annville, Pa. / Palmyra) who took one touch and fired a pass to the right post. Angstadt had moved into position and one-timed the ball into the back of the cage, to send the Blue Jays to their third straight win.
The Blue Jays (5-3) grabbed an early 1-0 lead as Angstadt crossed the ball in front of the Garnet cage and junior forward Andrea Miles (Phoenix, Mary. / Notre Dame Prep) smacked it home at 18:21.
Swarthmore junior defender Jordan Schmidt (Houston, Tex. / St. John's School) tied the game at 1-1 by converting a penalty stroke at 25:20. It is Schmidt's second goal of the season.
The score remained tied into the intermission with each team accumulating six shots.
Elizabethtown drew first blood in the second half as Angstadt weaved her way through the Garnet defense and backhanded a score at 37:28.
Swarthmore (4-2) kept coming, getting a goal from leading scoreer Natale Stone (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Select) at 52:29. It is her sixth goal of the season and 12th point overall.
Elizabethtown goalie Liz Hannegan (Lancaster, Pa. / McCaskey) posted seven saves on the night while Garnet goalie Katie Ashmore '11 (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) made career-high 12 stops.
Swarthmore continues its six-game homestand with a 5:00 p.m. game versus Drew on Monday, Sept. 24 and will resume Centennial action against Washington (Md.) two days later at 6:00 p.m.
