Pat X Marks a Garnet Win

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Swarthmore senior forward Michael Bonesteel (Clifton, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) headed the ball to the feet of senior midfielder Pat Christmas (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) who booted it to the left side of the goal, giving the Garnet men's soccer team a 2-1 double overtime victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
Christmas netted the game-winner for the Garnet (4-0-2) at 106:47, keeping Swarthmore's unbeaten streak alive at six. It is the senior captain's first goal of the season and the second of his career.
After a scoreless first half, the Seahawks notched the game's first goal at 72:34. Following a St. Mary's corner kick taken by senior midfielder Mikael Tigrett (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), the ball was bounced around in the box before junior defender Justin Dohn (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) found the back of the net with his first goal of the season.
The Seahawk goal halted Swarthmore senior goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe's (Milford, Del. /Milford) consecutive shutout streak at 340:31 minutes.
Swarthmore, tied for fourth in the latest NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region poll, equalized just five minutes later when freshman forward Morgan Langley (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iowan) rocketed a shot from 30 yards out into the top left corner. Langley took over the team lead with nine points (three goals, three assists).
The Garnet out-shot St. Mary's 25-9, while the Hawks held a 7-5 advantage on corner kicks.
Seahawks' senior Tim Carrier (Crownsville, Md. /Old Mill) came up with 12 saves, including a diving stop of a Bonesteel shot at 97:11 to push the game into double overtime.
Zach Weimar (Rutledge, Pa. / Friends Central) started in goal for Swarthmore and made four stops in the first half. Sutcliffe came in at the start of the second half and allowed the lone SMCM goal.
Swarthmore will host No. 10 Johns Hopkins in the much-anticipated Centennial Conference home opener on Saturday, September 15 at 7:00.
